Kenya Met Issues 50mm Rainfall Warning for Multiple Regions in the Next 24 Hours
The latest Kenya heavy rainfall forecast has had several regions on high alert with the forecasters warning that several areas are going to be hit with heavy rain, exceeding 50mm in just 24 hours.
In its latest update, the Department has said that parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Central Highlands and South East Lowlands are expecting some pretty heavy rainfall between Sunday 9am (22 Feb) & Monday 9am (23 Feb).
The counties that are likely to be hit include Kisumu, Siaya, Baringo, Trans Nzoia, Nairobi, Kiambu Machakos, Makueni and Taita Taveta, amongst others.
The western counties of Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga and Busia can expect moderate to heavy rainfall of between 20mm & 50mm but during the same period as well. However on a positive note, its going to be sunshine and clear skies in the Northern & North Eastern counties.
Widespread Rainfall Across Southern Kenya
In a statement, the department said that there is going to be widespread rainfall across the south of the country over the next 24 hours with heavy downpours expected in some areas. “Ranging from moderate to heavy rainfall and also very heavy (severe) rainfall in isolated areas,” the Department said.
The warning comes at a time when there is already growing concern of possible flooding in some vulnerable areas
Flood Risk and Safety Concerns
The Department is warning of the dangers of localised flooding in low-lying areas & poorly drained areas and has also warned of reduced visibility & slippery roads which could lead to road accidents. Rivers that are prone to flooding could also rise very quickly.
Residents have been told to keep an eye out & avoid crossing any flooded rivers & roads over the coming days.
You can also stay up to date with the very latest from the Department via their website and also their verified social media accounts.
Earlier Warning on Intense Rainfall
The warning comes on the back of an earlier warning issued 2 days ago which said that there was going to be intense rainfall all over the country between Friday 20th and Tuesday 25th February.
The Department had also forecasted that there was a 33 to 66 per cent chance of moderate to heavy rainfall.
“Be very careful if you have to cross a river or field as water levels can rise quickly in places that have not been hit by the rain. People are advised to be extremely cautious,” the earlier warning said.
It just goes to show just how unpredictable heavy rain can be.
What Residents Should Do
The authorities are urging residents in the affected areas to:
- Avoid any flooded roads and bridges
- Stay away from swollen rivers
- Make sure any personal property that could be at risk is secured
- Keep a close eye on the latest weather updates
Being prepared at this time especially for residents who live in low lying areas.
As the Kenyan heavy rainfall forecast starts to unfold, its key for residents to stay informed and also take the necessary precautions to stay safe and also prevent any damage to property.
