Former MP David Were’s Son Killed in Kisumu Robbery Attack
The family of David Were is still reeling after his 39 year old son was brutally murdered in a violent robbery in Kisumu on Sunday morning.
Hannington Were, 39, was reportedly ambushed by 2 suspected robbers on a motor bike around 1 a.m. The thugs had been following him right after he left home with a mate, just a little after midnight.
Attack Happened Moments After Leaving Home
According to what’s been reported, Hannington had popped out of his place with a friend, Peter Mutua, just after midnight only to find they were being tailed.
Mutua recounted the terrifying moments leading up the attack – how the suspects just turned on their bikes and came at them with some sort of metal object. He said he legged it, shouting for help.
“They came on the motorbike, turned and pulled out this sharp bit of metal that they used to bash him. I took off shouting for help,” Mutua said.
Another wave of shock and fear has washed over Kisumu after this one, especially with the crime rate spiraling out of control in the evenings.
Victim Succumbed to Stab Wounds
Former MP David Were said that his son was carted off to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital for treatment after the attack, but he just didn’t make it.
“Hannington was rushed to the hospital at about 2.30 in the morning and I was told he had been stabbed in the back,” David Were said.
The body was then taken to the hospital morgue and the coppers are still trying to get to the bottom of the killing.
Residents Raise Alarm Over Rising Crime
Hannington’s tragic death has really got the residents on edge, with many saying crime has just gotten out of hand in the city over the last few months.
A lot of locals are now calling for beefed up security and quicker police response, ‘cos these violent robberies are getting way too common in certain parts of town.
The police hadnt yet apprehended the attackers by Sunday, and the investigation is still ongoing.
