Nairobi Man Disappears After Lavish Date, Leaves Woman with KSh 77K Bill
It started off as a pretty bog-standard dinner date – you know, the usual: a bit of excitement, some promise for the future. But for one Nairobi woman, it ended up being a total shock to the system, a right old embarrassment and a stint in a police cell to boot.
Stellas (we wont use her real name) had agreed to meet a bloke at a swanky hotel in Nairobi. When she turned up, things were already starting to look a bit dodgy – her date was already sitting with another woman.
But she chose to give him the benefit of the doubt.
“Her date just said he’d be along any minute, kept checking in with her & she didn’t smell a rat till much later – she hung on from 6pm till 9pm”, her sister later spilled the beans.
Three hours went by. Stella had a meal, no great shakes at all – nothing out of this world, about Ksh 5000 at most.
But as it turns out, thats where things started to get a bit more complicated…
The Text That Changed Everything
She was just sitting there waiting when suddenly, this bloke comes out with a real weird ask – he wanted KSh 3,000 in exchange for some dollars. Stella was having none of it, and it turns out that might have just saved her from even bigger losses than she could ever have imagined.
Next thing you know, he says his meeting is wrapping up..
And then, to no one’s surprise, he never shows up.
A Bill That Didn’t Make Sense
When the waiter finally brings out the bill, Stella is totally gobsmacked.
KSh 77,300
All she had ordered was maybe a couple of bits – this bill was like something out of a movie – premium steaks, Don Julio tequila – the works, and it was all for her
Her sister filled me in on what had actually happened – the bloke had made multiple bookings, ordered loads of expensive booze to take away, and slapped it all on one account.
But the worst part – two other birds had been in the same boat as Stella.
From Victim to Suspect
Despite trying to explain the whole situation, when Stella offers to just pay for what she actually ate , the hotel just wouldn’t have it. Then the police get involved.
She – and another woman – get carted off to the cells.
The bloke though, well he’s long gone.
A Growing Pattern in Nairobi
This isn’t just a one-off – dating scams are getting more and more sophisticated all the time, and they’re starting to pop up in all sorts of places – like restaurants and hotels.
And all too often the poor soul who got conned ends up having to deal with the fallout.
