Kenya Weather Today: Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected Across Multiple Regions
Kenyans across the country are in for a soggy and, in some parts, a rather gusty Sunday according to the latest weather forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department , issued on the 3rd of May.
As per their advice, we’re in for a bit of rain across the country, with some areas looking like they might get a pretty heavy downpour before the day is out at 9pm. If you do decide to step outside, grabbing that umbrella might be a good idea, you never know!
Rainfall Intensifies in Key Regions
That hefty rain is going to hit the highlands either side of the Rift Valley as well as parts of the north-west and north-east with a vengeance.
And to make matters even more interesting, there are also going to be some pretty strong winds (southerly to southeasterly) that are going to exceed 25 knots ( or just under 12.5m/s) , which will be affecting parts of the low-lying counties in the north-west, north-east and the south-east. I suppose you could say that’s a bit of a mixed bag then.
Western Kenya and Rift Valley: Calm Morning, Stormy Afternoon
Residents in places like Kakamega, Vihiga and Busia, as well as all the way up to some of the more rural areas in the Rift Valley such as Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira and more – are looking like they might have a relatively quiet morning.
But don’t get too comfortable, things are about to change rather quickly. What starts as a sunny morning is likely to turn into showery and possibly even stormy conditions in the afternoon across a number of areas.
Central and Nairobi: Cloudy Start, Showers Later
In the more developed areas of the country such as the Highlands east of the Rift Valley – think Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga and more – the day starts with a bit of cloud cover.
It then shifts and turns into a bit more pleasant, before suddenly changing again in the afternoon with showers and thunderstorms popping up in a few areas, leaving you wondering what’s going on with the weather.
Northwestern Counties: Winds Pick Up
There’s a decent chance of some rain in Turkana and Samburu counties early on, but it’s not like it’s going to be a totally soggy day everywhere. Come afternoon, though, it’s really going to get going with showers and thunderstorms popping up all over the place. Those strong southeasterly winds in Turkana are going to be quite a challenge. We’re talking gusts of over 25 knots (12.5 m/s) that are going to make things feel even more unstable out there.
Northeastern Region: Mixed Conditions Throughout the Day
Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, and Isiolo counties are going to wake up to a few bits of sunshine, although not everywhere is going to get a sunny start. Some areas might pick up a light drizzle. The afternoon should see plenty of sunny spots, but parts of Marsabit, Garissa and Isiolo are looking at really picking up – those strong winds we’ve been talking about are likely to kick in there, even when the sky’s looking pretty clear.
Southeastern Lowlands: Mostly Dry but Windy
Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta and Kajiado are all on track for a generally sunny day. But it’s not all smooth sailing – Kajiado might see an isolated shower here or there later on, and parts of Makueni, Kitui and Taita Taveta are expecting strong southerly gusts that are going to make you feel like holding on.
Coastal Region: Light Showers Expected
If you’re along the coast – Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Tana River, we’re looking at a few spots getting a light drizzle at some point during the day. Time-wise, that’s likely morning and then afternoon again – so keep an eye out for those bits of rain coming and going.
