Kericho Governor Erick Mutai Faces Second Senate Impeachment Trial in Under a Year

For the second time in less than a year,Kericho governor Dr. Erick Kipkoech Mutai is staring down the barrel of an impeachment trial at the Senate and once again Kericho county is getting national attention.

The Senate is supposed to start proceedings this morning – which sets the stage for whats probably going to be a few pretty decisive days for that beleaguered county boss.

What the Senate Will Be Deciding

The real crux of the matter is all about these pretty serious claims. Senators will be having a close look at whether they think the accusations against Mutai – which run the gamut from pretty blatant disregard of the Constitution to outright abuse of office and just generally being a pretty bad egg – are strong enough to actually get him the boot.

This is no routine session – we’re talking a full blown plenary hearing, which means every single Senator gets a say before the final vote is cast.

How the Three-Day Process Will Unfold

It starts with a closed door session early in the morning – from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. Then things open up.

You can expect the charges to be formally read out, followed by some opening statements from both sides. And then things will get really interesting.

Up first will be the Kericho County Assembly. They’ll lay it all out – the evidence, their arguments – everything they think justifies getting rid of the Governor.

Then it’s Mutai’s turn to have a say.

Through his lawyers he’ll respond to each and every accusation, trying to dismantle the Assembly’s case bit by bit.

Governor Mutai’s Crucial Moment

At some point during all of this, Mutai will have to make a decision – he’ll either have to admit to the charges or deny them outright. Its a big moment, that’s for sure – and it could end up shaping the whole hearing.

Final Decision Expected Friday

Once both sides have had their say, the Senate will go into debate – where all the arguments get weighed up and the final positions get decided on. By Friday, a final vote will be cast.

Will the Governor be able to fend off the charges – or will he end up getting the boot? For now, all eyes are on the Senate chamber.
