Senator Methu Alleges Pressure to Join Ruto Government with CS Offer

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has made a pretty explosive claim now – saying that President William Ruto’s camp has been quietly trying to get him on board , getting him to join the government – and part of the deal was a Cabinet Secretary role .

Talking to Kameme FM on Monday, April 27, 2026, Methu laid bare the behind-the-scenes politics that he believes has little to do with doing what’s right for the country & more about showing loyalty.

‘Why can’t you talk?’—Methu recounts repeated approaches

According to Methu, the President’s people – he describes them as emissaries – have been coming to him and having the same conversation over & over . They basically just want him to smooth things out and maybe even work with the administration.

Now the way he puts it, these chats weren’t exactly subtle. They would often delve into his personal financial situation – which was pretty uncomfortable for him.

Methu says they’d basically say something like “Why are you at odds with this other person? Can’t you just talk it out? We all know about your loan problems & other stuff – so really its in your best interest to play ball with us. We’d be happy to help you out with a ministry – you can choose between the Ministry of Water and Agriculture – the government is a big place of course”

To Methu though, this wasn’t just friendly political chit chat – it felt deliberate & calculated

Cabinet offer or political compromise?

Methu thinks the Cabinet roles being offered up – especially in Water or Agriculture – are being presented as part of a bigger deal . Climb on board with the government, dial back the criticism and watch as opportunities start to open up.

But he’s still not buying it – to him it raises a pretty basic question : is this all about making the government stronger , or just about consolidating power ?

‘Leaders are being bought off’

The senator didn’t hold back – slid right into saying that other leaders across the party line are being targeted by the same bunch with the same dirty tricks.

He said its getting to the point where some are being won over – or should i say bought – to join the government team, even if it means going against their own values or what their voters are expecting from them.

Methu reckons this whole thing is making us forget what really matters – the serious issues affecting Kenyans.

A distraction from governance?

Methu’s main worry is what gets lost in the mix of all these shady deals. If being a leader is just about making deals and wheeling and dealing, then where does that leave actual policies, actually delivering for the people, and being held to account?

He warned that all these backroom deals can only weaken the ability to keep an eye on things, especially if critics just end up getting co-opted into the very system they’re meant to be questioning.

He’s saying leadership should be about doing what you believe in – not just lining your pockets.

Rising political tension

This all comes at a time when discussions around government appointments and party allegiances are getting rowdier by the day. Questions about who’s calling the shots, what counts for loyalty these days, and whether the state has too much say in who makes it to the top are all being tossed around.

We’ll just have to wait and see if the government fires back – but Methu’s comments have certainly added fuel to the fire in what’s already a pretty charged atmosphere.
