Azimio Demotes Wamboka as Parliament Probes Bribery Allegations

The Azimio Coalition has given the boot to Umula MP Jack Wamboka from the super influential Public Investments Committee (PIC). This move is a major shift in his position in Parliament, especially as investigations into bribery allegations continue to rumble on.

Now Wamboka has been shunted off to the National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity Committee – a move that insiders are already taking as a pretty clear signal that he’s been demoted. This is a big deal, as the PIC is one of the most powerful watchdog committees in the House & Wamboka’s removal comes just a month after he was suspended as chairperson of the PIC on Governance and Education due to some pretty serious complaints from witnesses who faced the committee.

Those witnesses sure painted a pretty grim picture – some of them claimed that the MP had been on the take & that he’d even intimidated officials during committee sessions. As a result, the credibility of the oversight process has been raised as a major concern. Parliament defended the suspension at the time saying it was needed to protect the integrity of the committee while investigations were ongoing.

Fresh Blow for Wamboka

Wamboka’s removal has come at a pretty bad time for him, just a month after his suspension as chairperson of the PIC on Governance and Education. This has left the opposition crying foul.

The trouble started in the first place after the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) raised some pretty serious concerns about Wamboka’s conduct. This led to the whole thing being referred to Parliament’s Powers and Privileges Committee after it emerged that the MP had been pretty heavy-handed with witnesses & had even demanded inducements in return for favourable treatment.

As of yet, neither Wamboka nor his mates have publicly commented on the changes to the committees.

NCIC Complaints Triggered Investigations

The transfer of Wamboka to the less influential Cohesion Committee is being read as a clear message from Azimio that they want to distance themselves from the whole Wamboka controversy.

The fact is, the PIC is a pretty big deal – and for Wamboka to lose that role is a significant blow to his influence. He’s essentially been moved from a powerful accountability committee to a committee that’s not exactly at the forefront of the action.

The question is, will the investigations be enough to clear the MP of wrongdoing or will it be more of the same – just more of a long drawn out process that does nothing to restore confidence in Parliament?

Political Message From Azimio?

With public scrutiny of Parliament already pretty intense, the Azimio Coalition’s handling of Wamboka’s fallout could end up being a real test of their leadership. The country is crying out for more integrity and accountability from elected leaders – and this is exactly the kind of thing that will only add to the pressure on Azimio.

Pressure Mounts Inside Parliament

All of this comes at a time when the National Assembly is really under the microscope when it comes to integrity and accountability. The whole Wamboka situation is going to be watched very closely – and it will be a key test of whether the National Assembly leadership has what it takes to actually tackle real corruption & keep their own house in order.
